Josef Original Horses Large Horses These large Beautiful horses are the creations of Muriel Joseph. She was very talented artist who created hundreds of animals, mice, angels, human figurines, and so much more. Muriel started her ceramic business in 1945 in the basement & garage in Southern California. The original order of labels for her pieces was supposed to be spelled “Joseph” but the printers made a mistake and it was to late to change them, as the ceramics were ready for shipment. So, the “Josef Originals” label name was born. Due to cheap reproductions being made of her early pieces, in 1960 Muriel went into a joint venture with Mr. Good and opened a factory in Japan where she moved her pottery business. This kept her prices reasonable & competitive. She had flyers showing her pieces, but as far as I was told by James E. Whitaker Jr, author of the 3 books on Josef Originals published by Schiffer publishing, “They never numbered their items”. She continued to design new items until 1981 when she retired. Muriel passed away in 1992, leaving her legacy in the wonderful pieces that have truly become highly collectible pieces. These large horses were released between 1960 and 1970's. The Stallions & Mares stand between 6" - 7" tall. Standing & Walking foals are between 4 1/2" to 5" tall. The large lying bay Thoroughbred foal is 3" tall. Joseph also released some "single" horses. I don't have many of these but I will feature pics of the one's I have that "are" Joseph pieces. Just a note here that the large white foal as far as I know was NOT part of the original large Arabian Family, it was a later release with the single horses. The early pieces having nicer mold details & color. Some of the later pieces were not as nicely done. There are bad copies of some Joseph Horses and once you have looked over what the real ones look like the fakes are really easy to spot! They are bad mold copies & paint jobs are also in bad colors.
